What is Yosakoi?
Kochi’s Yosakoi Festival is held every year for 4 days in August starting with the eve of the festival (held on the 9th), two days of main performances (held on the 10th and 11th), and the closing ceremony and national competition (held on the 12th). Approximately 200 teams of roughly 18,000 dancers prepare original programs, performing across Kochi City’s 9 competition venues and 7 performance venues. Dancers, called “odoriko,” follow elaborately decorated trucks, called “jikatasha,” while performing with naruko clappers in what is considered the grandest carnival in Kochi.
Started in August 1954 by the Kochi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Yosakoi Festival began amidst Japan’s post WWII recession with the hopes of promoting the wellbeing and prosperity of Kochi’s citizens as well as the development of Kochi’s shopping districts.
Influenced by Kochi’s Yosakoi Festival, a group of students in Hokkaido began their own Yosakoi in 1992, naming it the “YOSAKOI Soran Festival.” The festival sent shockwaves throughout the country as different Yosakoi festivals began to pop up all over Japan.
As of today, the Yosakoi Festival has expanded extensively with different versions of Yosakoi being performed in more than 200 regions in Japan and 33 countries abroad.
The charm of Yosakoi
|【Naruko】||A Yosakoi instrument, the naruko makes beautiful sounds. Naruko clappers are traditionally painted in the three main colors of Yosakoi: vermillion, yellow, and black.
Some are customized to match the team’s costume, which allows for originality and unlimited variations. A clear crisp sound can be achieved with a skillful flick of the wrist while the click-clack of naruko stopped at the right moments are a sign of good naruko technique.
|【Dance】||As long as you are dancing while holding naruko clappers and moving forward, if you’re smiling and dancing, anything goes. With no limitations in dance genres, the diversity and fusion of dances is one of Yosakoi’s main attractions.|
|【Music】||The rules state that as long as the phrases for “Yosakoi Naruko Odori” are incorporated into the song, any genre of music is accepted. This freedom of sound allows for an endless variety of compositions.|
|【Costumes】||Each team has a different costume capturing the team’s colors, inviting viewers to a tropical paradise or sending them a cool breeze. As the teams developed, so did their costumes. Now, Yosakoi costumes are seen more as an art form, displaying the latest trends and expressing the individuality of the team.|
